Pregnancy after Tummy Tuck

Women who have had a tummy tuck may later become pregnant without negative effects from the tummy tuck.

The abdominal skin and muscles will stretch during pregnancy, just as they do in women who haven’t had the surgery.

Similarly, pregnancy can cause unwanted changes in the appearance of the abdomen, whether a woman has had a tummy tuck or not.

I generally advise my patients to delay a tummy tuck until after the final pregnancy when possible, so that the results will be very long-lasting.

If you MIGHT someday become pregnant, but have no current plans to do so and suspect that it would likely be many years before you have a child (if ever), then it’s reasonable to have a tummy tuck now and enjoy the benefits. You’d need to understand that, if you do later become pregnant, your muscles and skin may stretch out once again (although still probably better than without the tummy tuck). In my opinion, I tummy tech would not interfere with your pregnancy. The pregnancy will change the shape of your abdomen obviously and this shape or improvement that the tummy tuck produced will not be regained after your pregnancy is complete. Because, pregnancy will cause your skin and fascia to stretch, thus limiting the long term benefits of a tummy tuck. (Larry Weinstein, MD, Morristown Plastic Surgeon)

Having Children after Tummy Tuck

I typically recommend that you wait to have a tummy tuck until after you are finished having children. A tummy tuck procedure repairs the stomach muscle in addition to removing excess fat, and if you become pregnant and stretch out your muscles and gain weight, you may find that you need another procedure afterwards. However, a tummy tuck should not interfere with the ability to carry another child. I hope this helps in your decision. (Mark E. Mason, MD, Dallas Plastic Surgeon)
