I'm still swollen after my DIEP Flap reconstruction, should I be applying heat or ice?
Abdominal donor site swelling, bruising and draining 19 days after DIEP flap breast reconstruction.
Jul 22, 2017
There is typically very little swelling 19 days after DIEP flap breast reconstruction. Your belly (abdominal donor site) may appear swollen from a collection of fluid under your belly skin, a seroma, which typically is not a threat to your health, but your surgeon should know about, and explain to you. Your donor site is not expected to be draining or substantially bruised 19 days after surgery. You may have had a collection of blood under your belly skin, a hematoma, that...
Ciproflaxcin taking 750mg x 2 daily for 3 days after breast reconstruction. Severe insomnia, no
Ciprofloxacin side effects after implant breast reconstruction
Jul 22, 2017
The symptoms you listed, "Insomnia, crying, no appetite Severe bloating", are unlikely to be caused by the antibiotic Ciprofloxacin. These symptoms are most likely related to the stress and emotional effects of the surgery you just had, combined with your underlying condition. I would expect these symptoms to resolve spontaneously, if they did not exist prior to your recent surgery.
Options for Reconstruction After Bilateral Mastectomy?
Tissue flaps produce the best reconstructed breasts, but...
Jul 22, 2017
Tissue flaps from the lower belly, such as TRAM and DIEP flaps, produce the best, softest, most natural, and most lasting and maintenance free reconstructed breasts, but the surgery and recovery period are longer than most other methods, and you have to accept a long scar across your lower belly, and belly button.
Bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction (implants) and radiation.
Asymmetry of reconstructed breasts is common after radiation.
Aug 28, 2016
You describe a very common and predictable outcome of bilateral breast reconstruction (by any method), followed by radiation to one of the two reconstructed breasts. The radiated breast is most likely to gradually continue to contract, and become more firm and higher on your chest, with less natural ptosis (sag). The best way to improve the symmetry is to add non-radiated skin and fat, in the form of a flap, from your belly or back, to the lower part of the radiated breast, or...
I had a fat transfer on April 19th for breast reconstruction. I look worse than before. Is this
Fat transfer is not a common or reliable method of reconstructing a breast.
Aug 28, 2016
Your photos are within the normal range 4 months after your liposuction and fat transfer surgery. The "wrinkles and pits and dark splotches" are not uncommon. The dark splotches (hyperpigmentation) will improve with time. Fat transfer for breast reconstruction is promoted by only a small number of plastic surgeons in the United States, and the results they claim are not able to be duplicated by the vast majority of plastic surgeons, which casts doubt on the reliability...
Do I have metal clips in my tummy and breast and are they getting closer to the surface of my s
You have clips after a DIEP flap procedure, but they are highly unlikely to cause any symptoms or problems.
Aug 28, 2016
It is common for plastic surgeons who perform DIEP flap breast reconstruction to use small, inert, metal clips during the surgery to ligate (pinch off) blood vessels to prevent and stop bleeding. These clips are anywhere from roughly one-third the size of a regular metal paper staple to about the mass of a staple. These clips very rarely are placed close to the skin, and even more rarely migrate to the surface of the skin. These clips are very unlikely to cause any...
DIEP Flap Surgery Best for Natural Breast Reconstruction Results?
The DIEP flap breast reconstruction procedure produces the best results
Aug 28, 2016
The DIEP flap procedure can reconstruct a breast that is softer, more naturally shaped, and more lasting than using a breast implant or other flap procedures for breast reconstruction. Yes, the DIEP flap surgery is longer and has a longer recovery period than breast reconstruction using implants, and that is why it costs more. However, breast reconstruction after mastectomy surgery is considered an important part of treatment for breast cancer and is generally covered by health...
When can I drive after a tummy tuck, liposuction and BBL?
When to drive after tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) surgery
Mar 19, 2016
I allow my patients to drive as early as one week after tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) surgery as long as they feel up to it, and are no longer taking narcotic pain medications.
I got tumescent Liposuction on flanks abdomen inner thighs 5 months ago and I have lumps uneven
Indentation, firm areas, contour irregularities after liposuction
Mar 19, 2016
The indentations at the inner thighs and contour irregularities at the abdomen are most likely  the result of uneven liposuction, and are unlikely to go away.  The firm areas at the abdomen may be areas of fat necrosis, that is, areas of fat that lost their blood supply, died, and became a firm area of necrotic fat and scar.  Areas of firm fat necrosis may get slightly smaller with time, but will not go away.  The contour irregularities are well known risks, or side effects of...
Will this loose skin I have from liposuction improve?
Loose skin overlying an area of liposuction
Mar 16, 2016
At this point, 10 weeks after the liposuction of 2.5 liters, the loose excess skin at the lower belly is not likely to shrink and tighten further.  This is one of the risks of liposuction.  The older a patient is, the more likely it is that the skin overlying the area that the fat is removed from will not shrink and tighten.  Unfortunately, additional liposuction in the same area is likely to make the condition worse, not better.  The most reasonable solution to get rid of the loose skin...
What are my options if I hate my results?
Revision/improvement of reconstructed breasts is generally covered by health insurance.
Feb 29, 2016
Breast reconstruction after a mastectomy (usually for breast cancer or an increased risk of breast cancer, such as a BRCA mutation), and surgery on an opposite breast to improve symmetry with the reconstructed breast, as well as additional surgery to improve reconstructed breast shape or symmetry, is covered by commercial heath insurance as required by the Womens' Health and Cancer Rights Act of 1998.  So, If you have had breast reconstruction after a mastectomy, and not cosmetic breast...
Can I look like the woman in red? I have had bpm with reconstruction
Breast reconstruction breast shape and size concerns after exchanging tissue expanders with implants.
Feb 29, 2016
The reconstructed breasts look like a implant that was substantially smaller in volume than the tissue expanders was used, or the space (pocket) the tissue expanders were in was opened (enlarged) substantially, for example, to open the pockets more medially (toward the middle of the chest).  In any case, the skin of your reconstructed breasts may shrink somewhat in the coming weeks and months, and improve the shape of the breasts.  Otherwise, in several months, I would discuss using larger...
