The stretch marks below the umbilicus, which is most of them, would be excised during the surgery.
Those above the umbilicus would remain but would be less noticeable. I think you would benefit tremendously from this procedure! (Robert L. Kraft, MD, New York Plastic Surgeon)
The first thing that you have to realize and what should have been gone over in your consultation is that just because you have a abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) does not mean that all of your stretch marks will be gone. ONLY the stretch marks in the area of the skin excision will be removed.
Any stretch mark which is not located in the area of skin excision can possibly be lowered but will not be removed. Also, pulling the skin tight does not remove the remaining stretch marks.
When I perform a tummy tuck I place the patient in an almost seated position to remove as much excess skin as possible and use multiple layers of sutures which also secure the skin flap down to the lower abdominal fascia to make sure the incision stays low.
The worst placement of a scar is a high riding tummy tuck incision. Be sure to go over the scar placement and amount of stretch marks removed with your plastic surgeon. (Jeffrey LaGrasso, MD, Miami Beach Plastic Surgeon)
One of the goals of a tummy tuck is to remove stretch marks, excess skin and create a flat abdomen with a smaller waistline. Many of the patients have had complete removal of stretch marks.
Other times, it is not possible to remove all stretch marks. An experienced plastic surgeon will let you know before surgery what kind of result you can expect. (Michael Law, MD, Raleigh-Durham Plastic Surgeon)
A tummy tuck operation removes the majority of the skin and fat between your belly button and your bikini line. A good amount of your stretch marks will be removed in surgery but it important to understand that your stretch marks above your belly button now, will be pulled down and will lie just above your panty line. Also, the stretch marks out to the sides will not be completely removed. (Kunaal Jindal, MD, Toronto Plastic Surgeon)
Stretch Marks After a Tummy Tuck
With a full tummy tuck generally all of the skin between the belly button and just above the pubic area are removed from hip to hip. Any stretchmarks present in this area should be removed as part of the procedure. Many patients have some stretchmarks that extend above the level of the belly button and after a tummy tuck these are displaced downward to the pubic area. Stretchmarks on the hips, however, often remain after a tummy tuck and there are laser treatments that can be very effective in greatly improving their appearance. (Scott Wells, MD, New York Plastic Surgeon)
Full tummy tuck shouldn’t remove stretch marks from your belly button location down.
A full tummy tuck will remove most of the stretch marks on your abdomen. The stretch marks in the level of your belly button down will be removed. You will have the stretch marks above your belly button still present that they will be in a lower position on your abdomen. (Brooke R. Seckel, MD, FACS, Boston Plastic Surgeon)
Stretch marks removed from tummy tuck
The stretch marks on your lower abdomen will be removed with a full tummy tuck and the marks on your upper abdomen will be positioned lower (below your umbilicus). You would also benefit from some liposuction of your flanks. Find a board certified plastic surgeon who has performed hundreds of tummy tucks. Review photos of other patients who have had surgery with this physician and have a consultation so that you can make an informed decision. (Christopher J. Morea, MD, Raleigh-Durham Plastic Surgeon)
All of the stretch marks from your pubic area to your belly button will be removed. Stretch marks above your belly button may not be removed but may look better due to the tension of the skin after the surgery. A tummy tuck may be partially covered by your health insurance. If not the total cost is $6000 which includes the board certified professional fee, board certified anesthesia fee, and medicare approved surgicenter. (George C. Peck, Jr, MD, West Orange Plastic Surgeon)
Would I still have a lot of stretch marks on my stomach after I got a full Tummy Tuck?
In my opinion – you are a perfect candidate for a Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty). All of the stretch marks below the belly button will be removed. During the procedure we can then better determine how much of the stretch marks above the belly button can be removed. It is likely that approximately the upper most one inch of stretch marks above the belly button will remain – but they will be in the lower groin region of just above your pubic hair line. In summary, 90% or more of your stretch marks will be removed. Those few remaining will be much less visible because of the stretching of the skin and their repositioning in the lower groin region. (Thomas Trevisani, Sr., MD, Orlando Plastic Surgeon)
Yes you will have stretch marks still but you’ll have a much better tummy!
In your case, all stretch marks cannot be removed because you have many that are beyond the boundries of removable skin. Nevertheless, you look like in the right hands, you could get an excellent tummy tuck. (Richard P. Rand, MD, FACS, Seattle Plastic Surgeon)
Removal of stretch marks with tummy tuck
great question and I understand your concerns. I think that about 75% of your stretch marks will be removed. The ones that remain will be much lower so that the mid portion of your tummy won’t have any. You will still have some around your sides. You surgeon will be able to show you better during a consultation. (Ronald Schuster, MD, Baltimore Plastic Surgeon)
Some of the stretch marks will be removed after tummy tuck. Genrally speaking they are the stretch marks below your belly button; however, your surgeon can show you what she/he anticipates removing. (Michael B. Tantillo, MD, Boston Plastic Surgeon)
