Of course, you can have a baby after a tummy tuck. But a better question would be why have the tummy tuck if you are planning to have more children. The usual rule is to wait until your family is completed before having the tummy tuck but rules are rules and some patients decide that their desires take over and then they become pregnant.
Whichever way you decide the final result will either be wonderful or you may need a revision. By all reports there has never been a complication with the infant due to previous tummy tuck.
The short answer is yes. The recommendation is that a women should wait to have an abdominoplasty until after she has finished having children. Pregnancy after abdominoplasty might “undo” what was accomplished with the procedure which serves to tighten the abdominal muscles and remove excess skin. A secondary abdominoplasty can be perfomed but may result in additional scarring.
Its always ideal to complete your family & be done with pregnancies BEFORE having a tummy tuck. That way, it will be the only operation you would need.
However, circumstances, situations, decisions might always change ,and if that were to happen, we usually advise our patients to hold on for at least a year following the surgery in case of a planned pregnancy.
Pregnancy and tummy tuck
You can a baby after a tummy tuck and there are multiple cases of the births taking place without complications. However, most surgeons would agree that it is better to wait until your family is complete before having a tummy tuck.
I would recommend waiting nine months to a year to have a baby after a tummy tuck. I have not heard of cases where the fetus was negatively affected because of a prior tummy tuck. If you are planning a pregnancy in the near future, I would recommend postponing the tummy tuck until after childbirth. The pregnancy could potentially stretch out the soft tissues and affect the results of surgery.
I advise all my patients to wait until they are done having children to undergo tummy tuck surgery. Once muscle repair and excess skin removal is performed, if pregnancy occurs, it is likely to cause horizontal and vertical stretch marks, as well as loss of the muscle repair. (Jeffrey W. Hall, MD Austin Plastic Surgeon)
I would not recommend a tummy tuck if you are thinking about having another child. Not that it will interfere with your pregnancy but it has the potential to undo all the exceptional work you may have. Revision tummy tucks are not as optimal and doing it the first time. (Raj S. Ambay, MD Tampa Plastic Surgeon)
In general it is safe to get pregnant after a tummy tuck but it is not the ideal scenario. The pregnancy will likely ruin the tummy tuck result and another procedure may need to be performed. If you can wait on the tummy tuck until you have had all your children it is a better option but you have already had an abdominoplasty and want more children it will probably be fine. I know a patient who had twins after a tummy tuck without any problems except now she needs a TT. (Chad K. Wheeler, MD Spokane Plastic Surgeon).
Pregnancy after a tummy tuck
Yes you can have a child even if you’ve already had a tummy tuck. The hormones of pregnancy will once again allow the abdominal wall muscles to stretch during childbearing. I think it would be important that you let your obstetrician know that you have had a tummy tuck just in case you need a c section.
I would wait at least six months or more after surgery before getting pregnant but frankly if you’re thinking of getting pregnant within six months after your tummy tuck it would probably make more sense to have your tummy tightened after your pregnancy. If you do it before your pregnancy there’s a pretty good chance you may want another tummy tuck.
I know that it’s a difficult deision as a single mom because feeling good about yourself can certainly make it easier to find a new partner. (Adam Tattelbaum, MD Washington DC Plastic Surgeon)
It is absolutely safe to get pregnant after a Tummy Tuck and will not cause any harm to your baby, however, keep in mind, that you will most likely lose the optimum results from your Tummy Tuck.
With that being said, if you would like more children go for it but plan to have some surgery after pregnancy to re-establish the results you recieved from you initial Tummy Tuck.
Yes, you can have a baby after a tummy tuck but the way your question is worded it sounds as if you would like to get pregnant in the near future. I don’t think you mean it that way but let me answer your question both ways. A tummy tuck will not interfere with a future pregnancy, just don’t be pregnant at the time of the surgery. From a financial standpoint, it’s quite likely you would need some further work done after the pregnancy if you want to keep the youthful look of a tummy tuck and so it might be less costly to wait until after you have your family and then do the surgery.
