Can I request a vertical tummy tuck scar?
A vertical tummy tuck scar will eliminate the stretch marks in this area however this will be replaced with a long vertical scar.
As long as you are comfortable with this, I think this is a reasonable option for your concerns. (Jake Lim, MBBS, FRACS, )
Vertical Tummy Tuck Scar
Based on your pictures, a vertical tummy tuck scar may be appropriate (and perhaps better at eliminating the stretch marks).
As long as you are comfortable with the scar, then you should have a good result. (Karol A. Gutowski, MD, FACS, Chicago Plastic Surgeon)
Vertical scar request for tummy tuck
I think your request is fine because you are educated about the options and the scars. The key is to find a doctor who is on board and who knows how to perform the operation.
A plastic surgeon who performs post weight loss surgery is a good choice. If the doctor does not know how to do the procedure and just tries to go for it because you want it then you may have a poor result or significant complication. (Gregory Lynam, MD, Richmond Plastic Surgeon)
Vertical scar for tummy tuck
If you have a lot of laxity a vertical scar may actually enhance the result. But you will still have some stretch marks below the belly button. (Mark A. Schusterman, MD, Houston Plastic Surgeon)
Vertical Tummy Tuck Possible?
Your request is unusual but as plastic surgeons, most of us try to remain flexible in our thinking and “tailor” operations to specific patients’ situations, needs, and goals. Certainly removing excess skin with a vertical excision is possible, but you should also consider worst-case scenario of abnormal scarring ( hypertrophic or keloid) and whether you will be okay with this “trade off”.
In other words, the scar may not heal as nicely as that in the photograph you post. Consider your decision-making carefully; you would probably not want to trade stretch marks for a poor scar. You may be equally as self-conscious about this scar as you would be about the stretch marks? (Tom J. Pousti, MD, FACS, San Diego Plastic Surgeon)
