How Soon After Surgery Can I Start Scar Treatment?
When to start scar therapy after tummy tuck
Feb 20, 2018
Thanks for your question. Most patients can start silicone sheeting around 2-3 weeks postop, depending on what was used to close the incision. If skin glue or skin glue tape was used, you need to wait until it falls off, usually by 3 weeks. It is also important not to use it on anywhere that may have a sore spot until that resolves. Silicone sheeting is best used at least 16 hours a day, and for 2-3 months for best results. It is worth it, because it is one of the few scar treatments…
Can the Tummy Tuck Belt Really Work?
Tummy Tuck Belt
Oct 11, 2017
From a medical standpoint, there is no scientific data to support this or similar products. One may get strengthening of abs doing this, but skin tightening and fat loss is unlikely. The photos do show an improvement, but I think they are misleading, and can easily be the result of model sticking tummy our or in. If you are interested in non surgical fat loss for the abdominal region, consider cool sculpt. However, as much extra skin as the model has in the before photo,…
40 days post op, How Long Will a Seroma Last After Tummy Tuck and Liposuction?
Seroma after tummy tuck with liposuction
Oct 10, 2017
Thank you for your question. Don’t worry, your end result will not be compromised. Usually a seroma is treated with 2-3 aspirations with a syringe. If this fails, infusion with a medicine like doxycycline can cause the seroma cavity to seal closed on the inside. If this fails, a drain can be place by a radiologist, but often the seroma cavity needs to be surgically excise to treat this effectively. This can be done through your tummy tuck incision. Be sure…
How Long Should I Leave my Dissolvable Stitch Alone?
Suture spitting after tummy tuck
Oct 10, 2017
Thank you for your question. Sometimes absorbable suture poke out of the skin, or “spit” after surgery. This is not uncommon, and usually can be easily treated by clipping the exposed suture at the level of the skin and the incision will then heal over it. Best of luck, and be sure to see a board-certified plastic surgeon.
Tummy Tuck Vs Laser Skin Tightening for Minimal Loose Skin After Pregnancy
Tummy Tuck vs Laser Skin Tightening
Oct 10, 2017
Thank you for your question. Usually a little extra skin after pregnancy is best treated with a mini-tummy tuck. In your case, this would likely be similar to your C-section scar, and would have the added benefit of a diastasis recti repair. Non-surgical skin tightening technology is not quite effective in this area, as opposed to the neck. I think the laser skin tightening treatments would not be nearly as effective as your surgical options. Be sure to see a board-certified…
Can You Have a Baby After a Tummy Tuck?
Pregnancy after tummy tuck
Sep 20, 2017
Thank you for your question. I advise patients that if they are definitely planning on getting pregnant, then to wait and have a tummy tuck after they are done having children. There is a definite possibility that the muscle repair and skin may stretch out and need to be revised in the future. However, it is perfectly safe for mother and baby if this happens. For you in particular, pregnancy seems like a more open ended, and I say get a tummy tuck and enjoy it….
Would a tummy tuck or liposuction give me better results?
Tummy Tuck vs Liposuction
Sep 19, 2017
Thank you for your question. So the decision as to whether a patient would benefit most from a tummy tuck or liposuction depends mainly on the degree of excess skin and fat. Patients with good skin tone, with varying degrees of fat will usually benefit from liposuction alone. Patients with extra skin usually benefit more from a tummy tuck, and many times this is combined with liposuction. The added benefit from a tummy tuck is the repair of loosened abdominal muscles,…
How Much Weight Can I Lose from Tummy Tuck Surgery?
Weight Loss From Tummy Tuck
Sep 18, 2017
Thank you for your question. Most patients will find that they do not lose a lot of weight after this procedure. During a tummy tuck, the extra skin and fat below the belly button is removed, and often the weight of this tissue is 1-2 pounds. In patients who are bariatric patients with a history of massive weight loss, this can be higher, around 3-6 pounds. The main goals of a tummy tuck are to remove excess skin and fat, improving abdominal contour, so you look and feel great….
How Long Should You Wear Your Binder/garment for After a Tummytuck?
Compression Garments after tummy tuck
Sep 7, 2017
Thank you for your question. I recommend an abdominal binder or a surgical compression girdle for the first 3 weeks after surgery. I then have patients transition into something a little looser like spanx or high waisted yoga pants. Foam padding can be used as well under garments. I liposuction is used as well, a longer period may be recommended. In my opinion, compression will decrease swelling and bruising, which will lead to less pain and a more speedy recovery. Best of luck and make…
Tummy Tuck Scars
Tummy Tuck Scar Location
Sep 5, 2017
Thank you for your question. Yes it is true that the tummy tuck incision is hidden below the underwear line. I prefer to place the middle of the incision along the top of the pubic bone, which you can feel on your self to get an idea. Most patients can wear swim wear including bikinis within 6-8 weeks of surgery. Some extremely low or high cut bikinis may reveal the end of the incision, but as the scar matures and color fades, this is not noticeable usually. Again this is only in high…
How Long Does Tummy Tuck Surgery Swelling Last?
Tummy Tuck Swelling
Sep 4, 2017
Thank you for your question. Swelling after a tummy tuck usually lasts a few weeks, with most of the swelling subsiding after 7-14 days. If you have liposuction of the front of the abdomen, it can make the swelling persist longer. The area below the belly button is usually the last area of swelling to resolve. Depending on your body type and procedures performed, swelling is not perceptible in clothes at around 3 weeks, but fully resolved in 3-12 months. Best of luck,…
Tummy Tuck Recovery
Tummy tuck recovery
Sep 4, 2017
The recovery period after a tummy tuck requires a period of rest for one to two weeks. Swelling, bruising, and discomfort are expected, but you will be given pain and anti-inflammatory medications, which are immensely helpful as you heal. Long-acting numbing medication is also used during the procedure which can help for the first 3 days after surgery.
You must also wear a compression garment around the abdomen for a period of time to help reinforce the new body shape and provide support and…
How Much Does a Tummy Tuck Cost?
Tummy Tuck Cost
Aug 31, 2017
Thank you for your question. Costs range from city to city, but on average in Dallas the cost is anywhere from $7500 to $12500. Factors that affect cost are need for muscle tightening(diastais recti repair), how many areas if any that need concurrent liposuction, and overall size of patient. Most centers, anesthesiologists and surgeons calculate costs by unit of time. I estimate costs for each individual patient, and doing the same procedure on two people of…
Reconstruction without alloderm?
Alloderm for breast reconstruction
Aug 31, 2017
Thank you for your question. I would say the standard of care today for reconstruction with tissue expanders after mastectomy involves the use of alloderm or other similar tissue matrix. This allows the the pocket to be precisely controlled, but also allows more fluid to be put in the expander during surgery. This then shortens the overall time of expansion and better preserves your breast skin for future reconstruction with implant or DIEP flap. The better the pocket is…
Scar revision after breast augmentation?
Breast Augmentation Scar Revision
Aug 28, 2017
Thank you for your question. It appears to me that you underwent an augmentation via a circumareolar incision with a pretty large implant. The nature of this incision is one of higher tension, than a wise pattern/anchor type breast lift. I would advise you to down size to a much smaller implant, and undergo a breast lift at the same time. I think you would have a better chance at a longer lasting result than with the large implants you have now. Please seek a board…
