A true test of a surgeon's skill is what can be done without the benefit prior preparation provides. In this case, we have a young girl who presented to South Shore Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery on an emergency basis from the dermatologist's office. The patient had a skin cancer removed from her nose via the Mohs technique. As it turned out, the cancer cells had spread beneath the skin's surface resulting in a defect far larger then anticipated. Always available for his patient's, after receiving the telephone call from the Dermatologist, Dr. Jonathan Landon, MD, Chief of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at South Shore Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery brought the patient to his office for immediate reconstruction. Without ANY time for prior preparation, he went straight to work designing a closure that would result in a minimally visible scar while preserving the patient's natural beauty and nasal architecture. As is clear from the series of photographs, one can get a sense of the post-operative course demonstrating the fascinating remodeling a scar undergoes as it matures. By following our standard post-operative scar management protocol, you can see the scar soften and blend in with the surrounding skin before your eyes! Additionally, following reconstruction, all of her nasal features are preserved; the 'worms-eye-view' photographs demonstrate complete symmetry of her nasal architecture.
