Hernia and tummy tuck
In general, tummy tuck can be a painful procedure. Umbilical hernia is repaired during the procedure. You can have a pain pump placed during surgery.
This will reduce the pain and probably clear your concern. (Moneer Jaibaji, MD, San Diego Plastic Surgeon)
Small umbilical hernias can be repaired at the sametime as the tummy tuck. Generally the discomfort and pain should be about the same.
However, you may feel that your bowel function may be a little slow to return. It is best to get both done at the same time. (Shashidhar Kusuma, MD, Plantation Plastic Surgeon)
Recovery from a tummy tuck and a tummy tuck with a hernia repair is the same. You should absolutely have the hernia repair either before you consider the surgery or at the same time. (Michael A. Fiorillo, MD, )
Hernia repair with tummy tuck
Umbilical hernias may occur after pregnancy and are commonly repaired at the same time as a tummy tuck. It does not add any pain or discomfort to the recovery, and is covered by your insurance. (Beverly Friedlander, MD)
Tummy Tuck surgery with Hernia Repair
It is not uncommon to perform an umbilical hernia repair in conjunction with a tummy tuck. The discomfort during recovery is the same time and my postoperative instructions are the same. Larger hernias may require additional operative time and are slightly more involved than a small umbilical hernia repair; however, as many of us are fully trained and board certified general surgeons, hernias do not represent a problem. Some plastic surgeons routinely ask a general surgeon to perform the hernia repair which is also quite appropriate if they do not perform hernia repairs routinely. (Luis Zapiach, MD, Paramus Plastic Surgeon)
No additional pain with adding hernia repair to abdominoplasty
It is normally possible to combine these two procedures and the recovery should be about the same. Most plastic surgeons would be comfortable doing both; occasionally, a general surgeon might be involved for the hernia portion. (Bruce K. Barach, MD, Westchester Plastic Surgeon)
Does a hernia repair add pain to a tummy tuck?
Certainly a large hernia repair can be more painful. Most umbilical hernias, however, are small. The bigger concern is that doing both at the same time can cause problems with healing of the belly button. It is critical that you plastic surgeon be present for the hernia repair so that important blood vessles are not divided. (Neal Goldberg, MD, New York Plastic Surgeon)
