Hernia repair during a tummy tuck

In most cases, a hernia can be repaired during a tummy tuck procedure. In fact, umbilical hernias are routinely repaired during a tummy tuck by a plastic surgeon.

In most case, a hernia can be fixed during a tummy tuck by a plastic surgeon. In some cases, a general surgeon may get involved also.

It depends on the surgeon’s training and experience and the type of hernia.  Most of the time, the surgeon will be able to detect a hernia prior to surgery and if they don’t feel that they can repair it, they will consult with a general surgeon to do this part of the operation.

Umbilical hernias are commonly repaired at the time of tummy tuck surgery. You need to see a board certified plastic surgeon who commonly performs this procedure.

If your surgeon isn’t comfortable with hernia repair, a general surgeon may need to work with your plastic surgeon.

Small, incidental hernias are encountered during tummy tucks and most plastic surgeons feel comfortable in repairing them at the time of a tummy tuck.

Larger hernias may need to involve a general surgeon, but this is less common.
