How to reduce swelling after a tummy tuck

Every person’s body recovers differently but typically there is a significant improvement of swelling after a tummy tuck procedure within the first few weeks of surgery.

After that the swelling will continue to resolve but it could take up to 6 months before the final result is visible.

The numbness after surgery will also decrease with time but some numbness could be permanent as a result of the local anesthetic used during liposuction.

My recommendation is to try and be patient and let your body have as much time to recover as possible.

Following your plastic surgeon’s post operative instructions will help minimize your recovery and get you back to full strength as quickly as possible.

Wearing your compression garment and drinking plenty of fluids will continue to be beneficial.

If the swelling does not continue to improve or if it seems to increase be sure to contact your plastic surgeon and schedule time for an evaluation. (Morgan E. Norris, MD, FACS, )
