Opinions on Stem Cell Facelift?
The term “Stem Cell Facelift” is inaccurate
Sep 13, 2011
In accordance with a few other commentators, I would have to disagree with the merits of this title. However, I have to emphasize that we are entering an exciting time in facial rejuventation and medicine in general, as we learn more about the therapeutic effects of adult adipose-derived stem cells.

There is encouraging scientific and clinical evidence that the stem cells withn fat grafts has an additional "regenerative" effect in the surrounding tissue. In fact,…

Thermage or Blepharoplasty for Sagging Under Eyes?
Thermage is not the answer.
Jul 7, 2011
Thermage may work on some areas of the body in some individuals some of the time!! For specific and distinct skin excess, the results may be disappointing. For mildly loose skin or to prevent it, Thermage may be valuable. Lower eylid can be improved with Fraxel, peels or surgery.
Fat Transfer for Under Eye Hollows
FAt Injection to lower eyelid must be performed delicately
Jul 7, 2011
Fat grafting is great tool to improve lower eyelid condition. Micro grafts of patients' own fat can be safely placed in the hollowed area below the eye and nearby structures. This injection will fill the hollowed areas and improves the skin condition. There is early evidence that mesenchymal stem cells naturally contained in the fat grafts stimulates regenerative properties of the skin. Caution must be used to place only small amounts of fat. Over-injection and misplaced fat will be hard…
Start exercise routine 4 weeks before fat transfer?
Exercise before surgery is OK
Dec 7, 2009
Exercise before your surgery should be fine. Significant weight fluctuation may effect the fat equilibrium in the face, particularly AFTER your procedure. Your surgeon may have specific restriction on exercise during the recovery period. However, exercise before surgery is usually not an issue unless it effects the volume of fat available.
Best wishes on your procedure and Happy Holidays!
How effective are post-Liposuction touch-ups?
It is important to know whether the bumps are excess fat or post-liposuction scars
Aug 27, 2009
The bumps you are referring to could be either scar tissue that has formed after liposuction. If that is the case, time and massage should provide some improvement. A persistently hard scar may respond to corticosteroid injection, however, this injection can have its own set of complications such as tissue atrophy and telangiectasias, so not a great choice.
If the bumps are due to under-suctioned fat deposits, then liposuction with a small cannula could be helpful. The closer these…
Fat transfer for compound fracture scar?
Fat grafting may be a good option to correct your scar deformity
Aug 27, 2009
The scar deformity has two components:
1-The loss of volume from the area after orthopaedic procedures
2-Scar bands that form in the deep plane and tether the skin
To properly correct the deformity, it may be necessary to release the tethering and then add the fat grafts. It may take more than one attempt to get good results. Knowing that one can add more fat later, will remove the impetus to put too much fat and risk ulcerations, etc
Stem cells for cosmetic treatments
Stem Cells are present in fat grafts
Aug 27, 2009
The scientific side of plastic surgery is very busy investigating the therapeutic effects of stem cells and certain modalities are very near clinical use.
In clinical practice, many of us who have been performing fat grafting procedures have been pleasantly surprised by the overall improvement in skin condition aside form the filling effect.
Fat grafting, with or without the concept of stem cells is a fantastic rejuvenation/cosmetic tool. It is natural, abundant and effective. It just…
Smart Lipo for loose abdomen after Mini Tummy Tuck?
Quite honestly, there is nothing too smart about Smart Lipo used for skin tightening
Aug 27, 2009
Liposuction at its best, is a procedure to remove fat, not to tighten skin. Plastic surgeons as a group would disagree on discernible skin tightening features of laser or ultrasound assisted liposuction. Performed by a qualified plastic surgeon, liposuction can be followed by some degree of skin tightening depending on the condition of the skin.
It is possible that on select patients, the addition of laser or ultrasound may enhance skin tightening. But this effect is secondary and…
Modern method for fat injections?
The techniques vary in harvest, preparation and placement of fat grafts
Aug 27, 2009
You are correct. The old technique involved sucking the fat as in liposuction and re-injecting it.
These are the areas where fat grafting technique has improved:
1) During harvest, the fat cell must NOT be exposed to high suction. Fat must be harvested using hand held devices that minimize suction injury to the fragile, living fat cells.
2) Preparation involves removing other components in the aspirate that are not living fat cells. If you include a lot of blood and other cells i nthe…
Fat transfer after filler removal
Fat transfer is an excellent choice to correct the defects
Aug 27, 2009
Fat grafting , properly performed, can have a long-lasting results. Agree with previous poster that the surgeon must focus on the viability of the fat grafts.
Early fat grafting techniques had less than desirable outcome. The long term survival was poor and the incidence of irregularities was high.
With proper attention to harvest and implantation (you can call it many names, but it really depends on what the technique does) one can achieve fat survival rates of 50-80% (at least in my…
Difference between facelift procedures?
Facelift procedure encompasses a range of techniques to improve the aging face
Aug 27, 2009
Facelift was historically designed to remove the loose skin and pull the lower face. This procedure produced the typical "wind-tunnel" unnatural look. Subsequent modifications made the matters worse. Thinking that more pull or more lift is needed, the surgeons added a deeper component to the surgery. These deeper techniques made matters worse! Not only the patients looked unnatural and "overly pulled" but they also lost their natural facial movements and…
How does scarring from fat transfer manifest?
At six weeks, you can still expect some transient post-operative changes
Aug 21, 2009
As stated by the previous poster, you may be noting persistent post-operative induration. Scar tissue can remodel for many months post-op and during this phase, the changes can be visible. In my practice, post-operative massage can help clear these changes faster. Massage can help align the remodelling tissue and enhance lymphatic drainage.
Should I be concerned with eye bags or puffiness after fat transfer?
There might be a cause for concern, but it is too early to tell.
Aug 21, 2009
Fat grafting can take longer than two weeks to stabilize. Your surgeon should be able to advise you if he thinks your progress is within the norm. Slight irregularity and small bumps may be a transient process. I generally ask my patients to tape and massage the area.
If a patient has persistent irregularity or bumps after waiting a reasonable amount of time, then you can consider revision. Persistent areas of scarring after surgery may respond to corticosteroid injection. Persistent…
Fixing scar from Mini Tummy Tuck?
The short answer is yes
Aug 21, 2009
This depends on the condition of the skin. With mini-tummy-tuck, the belly botton is not moved, so it tends to keep the lower abdominal skin from moving down. If there is some skin laxity, the scar can be lowered. Otherwise, one may have to detach and move the belly botton lower to accomodate the lowering of the scar.
yuor surgeon should be able to assess this during your visit. It is better to wait 3-6 months before considering the revisional surgery.
Natural look after Mid face lift and Fat transfer swelling?
You would expect significant swelling after the procedure
Aug 21, 2009
Combination of midface lift and fat transfer can result in the expected post-operative swelling. With previous cheek implant surgery, drainage patterns may be effected and the resulting swelling may take longer to clear.
Your surgeon should be able to determine whether there is any localized fluid collection that is contributing to the swelling. You may also ask your surgeon whether gentle lymphatic massage could help clear the swelling. If there are no unexpected complications, you can…
