Surgical tattoo removal

Lower abdominal tattoos can be removed surgical with a tummy tuck

In a tummy tuck the skin of the lower abdomen is removed. Usually the skin excision involves an ellipse of skin that goes horizontally from hip bone to hip bone and vertically from the belly button to the pubic bone.

If the tattoo is within that area it will be removed with a tummy tuck. Unfortunately, most tattoos that I have seen in the lower abdominal/groin area are positioned so that only the upper half of the tattoo can be easily removed with a tummy tuck.

Sometimes it is best to leave the lower portion of the tattoo and look laser removal afterwards. If the tattoo is too low, excision of it with a tummy tuck would lead to an abnormal scar. (Jason E. Leedy, MD, Cleveland Plastic Surgeon)

Tatoos and Stretch Marks Can Be Removed With A Tummy Tuck

The surgical tattoo removal

One of the less commonly discussed benefits of a tummy tuck is that it is quite effective at removing stretch marks, scars and tatoos of the lower abdominal region.

Because the skin is removed, any one of these can be removed as long as it is located below the belly button, in or above the hair bearing pubic region and between the hip bones. The final scar is usually hidden by underwear or swim suits and does well long term.

It is possible to remove most of your tatoo with a tummy tuck. A more definitive answer cannot be given without physical examination. (Robert F. Centeno, MD, FACS, Fairfax Plastic Surgeon)

You may want to post a picture to help answer your question. However as long as the tattoo is located between your umbilicus and the pubis there should be no problems removing the tattoo in conjunction with the abdominal skin and fat.

Removal of tattoo with Tummy Tuck

Depends on the exact location of the tattoo. Without a picture I cannot give you an answer. Consult with a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon to address this concern. (Robert E. Zaworski, MD, Atlanta Plastic Surgeon)

Without pictures, it is difficult to answer this question well. If the tattoo is located between the belly button and the pubic area, it should be able to be removed in a full tummy tuck.

An in person consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon will give you the best answer. (Naveen Setty, MD, Dallas Plastic Surgeon)

It just depends on the location and size of the tattoo. Typically, with a standard abdominoplasty, the skin between the pubic region and the umbilicus is removed. This might contain the tattoo. (David A. Lickstein, MD, Miami Plastic Surgeon)

Tattoo location determines if it can be removed during a tummy tuck

Surgical tattoo removal with tummy tuck

The incision for a tummy tuck is often placed upon the lower abdomen, near or at the hair-growing skin of the pubic area. The tissue removed typically is the skin and fat from this lower abdominal position, up to (and often above) the level of your umbilicus (belly-button).

If your tattoo is somewhere between your belly button and pubic region, then it can likely be removed during the tummy tuck. A picture would help answer this further, but this is something that your board-certified plastic surgeon should be able to answer in advance of your tummy tuck surgery. (Joseph D. Alkon, MD, Newark Plastic Surgeon)

Depending on the location of the tattoo it may be able to be removed with a tummy tuck. A photo would be very helpful. Typically the tissue from the belly button to the natural crease of the lower abdomen is removed with a tummy tuck. (Brian J. Lee, MD, Fort Wayne Plastic Surgeon)

Remove Tattoo during Tummy Tuck Procedure?

You will do well posting a picture of your abdomen/tattoo and/or seeking consultation with board-certified plastic surgeons in your area. Whether or not the tattoo can be removed turned toward the procedure depends on its location in relation to the skin removed during the time until procedure. I look forward to seeing posted pictures.
