Tummy tuck and flank liposuction

Abdominoplasty and flank liposuction are separate procedures

Tummy tucks andflank liposuction are separate procedures. But, the two surgeries can be performed together in certain individuals if it would benefit the end results.

They are charged as separate surgeries, but some practices may offer a lower anesthesia fee because total time of the combined surgery is often less than the time for the surgeries performed separately. (Gregory Park, MD, San Diego Plastic Surgeon)

Tummy Tuck, whether flank liposuction of flanks and abdomen is performed simultaneously?

The tummy tuck and flank liposuction

Patients who have fullness of the hip, flank and waist usually benefit from artistically performed flank liposuction of those specific areas at the same time as a tummy tuck.

In the patients who would benefit from it, doing the liposuction generally results in a more aesthetically appealing result. You need a full consultation with a plastic surgeon certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery and ideally a member of The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS).

Procedures should be individualized depending on your desired outcome, medical history, physical examination and understanding of the pros and cons of the various procedures. (Robert Singer, MD, La Jolla Plastic Surgeon)

Tummy tuck and flank liposuction after surgery

Many surgeons perform flank liposuction of the flanks or hips at the same time as a tummy tuck. Some also suction the abdomen as well. It depends on your particular build. I prefer not to suction the abdominal flap at the same time as the tummy tuck over concern that it could affect the blood supply to the skin.

However, many surgeons will suction the abdomen and the risk of circulation issues has been shown to be quite low and the procedure is safe. (Ronald J. Edelson, MD, San Diego Plastic Surgeon)

Flank Liposuction and Tummy Tucks

Many tummy tuck patients need the flanks or muffin tops liposuctioned at the same time to get the best waistline result. Because it lies outside the effects of the tummy tuck area, such flank liposuction takes additional surgery time and effort and thus is an additional expense. (Barry L. Eppley, MD, DMD, Indianapolis Plastic Surgeon)
