Can you have a baby after a tummy tuck
Of course, I would not recommend planning on having a tummy tuck until you are finished having babies but sometimes babies arrive unpredictably! There is no danger to the baby and you will have a normal pregnancy. However the skin and muscle will stretch again and you may need another abdominoplasty.
Pregnancy after tummy tuck is not a problem, however it is difficult to predict how the result will hold up. It depends on your genetics, skin elasticity, body shape, previous baby weight, number of children and amount of weight gained with pregnancy.
I would wait at least six months to a year after tummy tuck surgery. You may have some resultant laxity and may need a skin tightening or even further muscle tightening.
Of course, you may have a baby after a tummy tuck!
Yes it is possible to have babies after a tummy tuck. However your abdomen may not look as good after the baby as it did after the tummy tuck.
In a tummy tuck we do 3 things
- Remove excess fat
- Repair the muscles
- Remove excess skin.
Having a baby may reverse some of this correction you achieved after your tummy tuck but never completely. Even if you have a baby after tummy tuck, your tummy will always look better than if you never had the operation.
An interval of at least 3 months after tummy tuck, before pregnancy is probably best, but if you have plans for another pregnancy in the near future, it makes more sense to postpone until you are done having kids.
In your case, it sounds like future pregnancies are uncertain for you, so it is quite reasonable to have a tummy tuck at this time, without jeopardizing your ability to carry a pregnancy in the future. (Paul C. Zwiebel, MD Denver Plastic Surgeon)
The best timing is to complete your family before having a tummy tuck. That being said, if you get pregnant after having a tummy tuck, it should not harm you or the fetus. You will stretch out enough. After the baby is born, you may need to address the new stretching that occurred.
In most cases a tummy tuck is used to correct the looseness around the front of the belly caused by stretching during pregnancy. If you know you are planning on having more children, I would suggest waiting to have a tummy tuck. That being said, it is perfectly safe to have another child after having a tummy tuck. It is important to give the incision enough time to heal so that it won’t be compromised from the stretching.
As you can read on this forum, most board certified plastic surgeons agree it is best to wait until you are done. I have patients occasionally who have life circumstances that make them want to have the surgery done now, such as a divorce or separation, but who are not certain on wether they will have kids in a future relationship.
From a surgical persective, a tummy tuck won’t prevent you from having more kids, but you will likely restretch the results. This is a personal decision, and you must weight the pros and cons for yourself.
Although it is safe to have liposuction and tummy tuck and then have another child, it does not make sense to undo the benefits of the procedure by having a child after you have had these procedures. Pregnancy will definitely cause weight gain and skin laxity which will undo your results.
You also will have to undergo the risk and expense of a second surgery if you wish to correct the effects of a second surgery.
Of course its safe to have a baby after a Tummy Tuck. However, you could potentially need a revision or another TT. In my practice I try to discourage women from undergoing a TT if they are planning more pregnancies. However, this is just to save them the cost and down time from possible revisionary surgery. But, if they have the means and support – why not? If this is the case, then I advise women to refrain from future pregnancies for a good solid year post TT.
This is just a precautionary measure, since it can take a full year for tissues to fully heal. (Gary M. Horndeski, MD Texas Plastic Surgeon)
It is safe to become pregnant after a tummy tuck. It is best to wait 8 months to 1 year after the tummy tuck to allow the area to fully heal. The longer you wait the better the post-partum.
