Procedure for tummy tuck
You are right to be concerned about having a practioner do a procedure for you that is outside his or her scope of practice. If someone does not do liposuction or full tummy tucks and only does lower tummy tucks, then does that person understand what a lower procedure for tummy tuck will accomplish, versus those other procedures?
If they only have a hammer, do they treat everything as if it were a nail? Does that person have the experience and training to avoid the problems that accompany those procedures, and to treat them should they arise? If I can get away with delivering babies most of the time based on my limited medical school experience doing so, should I, as a plastic surgeon, add that to my practice even though I was not trained in that field?
There is a reason for specialty training and the complex process of residency accreditation and board certification and continuing medical education that are associated with it. I have seen some truly unsightly tummy tuck scars and contour deformities resulting from physicians in other fields trying to perform procedure for tummy tucks, and many of those problems cannot be corrected, and if they can be, the overall cost may be much higher to the patient than if they had just gone to a plastic surgeon for the initial surgery. (Robert M. Grenley, MD, Oak Brook Plastic Surgeon)
Don’t be lured by his great reputation; that’s only for his OB-Gyn skills. He does not have the appropriate training for an abdominoplasty; that’s why he “doesn’t do lipo of belly button work”.
A procedure for tummy tuck only on the lower abdomen that looks 5 months pregnant will leave you with a less than optimal tummy tuck result. Find an experienced board certifed plastic surgeon. (Ricardo Izquierdo, MD, Toronto Plastic Surgeon)
LIke most answers here, I would ask you whether you would be comfortable with an orthopedic surgeon doing your heart surgery, or a plastic surgeon doing your brain surgery. Does that answer your question as to whether or not Obs/Gyne should do Plastic surgery? Plastic Surgeons have spent many years in Plastic surgery training that is different from the training ObsGyne get.
We all know how to operate and treat patients but we learn how to deal with different problems: diagnosing them, recognizing them, and treating them. There is more to a procedure for tummy tuck than just cutting out a piece of skin. Sincerely, Martin Jugenburg, MD (Martin Jugenburg, MD, New York Plastic Surgeon)
The success of a procedure and whether the correct procedure is recommended and performed appropriately is not just dependent on your anatomy but on the training and experience of the surgeon. If a patient asked me to deliver her baby or to perform a hysterectomy during an abdominoplasty, I certainly would not do so.
I have never heard of a surgeon who limits himself to lower abdominal liposuction. I strongly recommend that you see a plastic surgeon in consultation to determine precisely what surgery someone with the appropriate training and expertise would recommend. We not only are trained in how to operate but also in the reasons that an operation should not be undertaken.
You have not specified the nature of the gynecologic procedure, whether any significant blood loss is anticipated, etc. All of these are important factors to consider in the decision for surgery. (Robert L. Kraft, MD, )
Who should do your procedure for a tummy tuck
Hello, When it comes to your body and to the stress and mental health that can be associated with a bad result following elective surgery I would recommend that you not only see a board certified plastic surgeon, but one that can show you before and after results of patients that looked like you before surgery and that look as you want to look after surgery.
Seek consultation with several plastic surgeons and choose the one that meets all of your needs. Just because your OB GYN will be in the operating room doing some GYN surgery does not mean that he should do surgery that he is not optimally qualified to do. All the best, Dr Repta (Remus Repta, MD, Scottsdale Plastic Surgeon)
You may have an excellent result. The success of a procedure depends on many factors but chief among them the preoperative anatomy, the procedure that’s chosen, the manner in which that or those procedures are performed, and the way the patient heals. In theory, any surgeon – board certified or not – could perform any procedure.
However, board-certification within specialties was established and has been maintained in order to give patients the opportunity to assess their surgeons BEFORE their surgery. I suppose that, as a board-certified plastic surgeon (American Board of Plastic Surgery) one could say that I have a bias, but it is my feeling that – in general – you’ll get the best results when you go with the best and most experienced surgeons, and that the average plastic surgeon (ABPS) performs many more tummy tucks than the average OB-GYN.
But it’s a new world and we’re not talking average – we’re talking about YOUR surgeon, and YOU. My advice is that you go around and see a few board-certified surgeons – I would recommend plastic surgeons – and that you make a decision after you’ve seen them. There are, for sure, no guarantees – but it’s in your best interest to stack the odds in your favor before you have any surgery. I hope that this helps, and good luck, Dr. E (Alan M. Engler, MD, FACS, New York Plastic Surgeon)
Non Plastic Surgeon performing a procedure for tummy tuck
Well, the brief answer is another question, “I am a board certified Plastic Surgeon, do you want me to deliver your baby?” I can, I learned how to do deliver babies in Medical School. As long as everything goes well, and you don’t have any complications, you’ll do fine!
Or, if there is a problem or a complication, I won’t know how to treat it or I might not even recognize it. You or the baby could develop a severe problem, maybe even life threatening. OR you could just use a board certified OB/GYN doctor that was trained to deliver babies and handle all the potential complications associated with a delivery. Which would you choose?
I know what I would choose, the doctor trained to deliver babies would be delivering the baby and the doctor trained to do tummy tucks would be doing the procedure for tummy tuck!!
If your doctor has already admitted that he doesn’t perform any lipo or belly button work, then he is not performing a procedure for tummy tuck. He is probably going to remove a little skin and call it a day. If that is what you want, you will get that. If you want a full tummy tuck, then consult a board certified plastic surgeon who performs tummy tucks frequently. Choose wisely. (David Finkle, MD, Omaha Plastic Surgeon)
