Tummy tuck after c section
My goal as a plastic surgeon are to provide our patients with the best result under the safest and most optimal circumstances. Undergoing a 25-50 lb weight gain and then having a tummy tuck is not optimal or safe. We always recommend doing body contouring procedures at a stable weight that has been maintained for greater than 6 months.
Therefore, a tummy tuck immediately after C section will not provide an optimal result as the skin, fat, and muscle have undergone 9 months of trauma and will be undergoing more change in the post-partum phase. Best advice, wait 6 months after your c section and be sure that you no longer desire to be pregnant again. Post-tummy tuck pregnancy will restretch the skin and muscle again. (Paul S. Gill, MD, Houston Plastic Surgeon)
Right after a C-section is NOT the time for a tummy tuck. Wait until your muscles and skin have finished shrinking and then your tummy tuck results will be more predictable. (Richard H. Fryer, MD, Salt Lake City Plastic Surgeon)
Wait 6 months after childbirth for tummy tuck
I recommend waiting at least 6 months after childbirth (C section or vaginal delivery) before having tummy tuck surgery done. Results are much more predictable and wound healing is improved. (Scott C. Sattler, MD, FACS, Seattle Plastic Surgeon)
Immediately after C-section is not the time for a tummy tuck
This is a very common question, and the best answer is no. Immediately after C section is not the time for a tummy tuck for a number of reasons. First, your body is not at its normal “equilibrium” state in terms of swelling, stretch, and hormones to say the least. It takes time for your skin to shrink, swelling to go down, and muscles to go back toward their normal position Second, you will have a newborn on your hands, and the recovery from C section will be strain enough at that time.
Even if you found a surgeon to perform an immediate tummy tuck, your results will be sub-optimal (likely requiring revision at a later date), and your focus will be split between trying to recover and trying to care for your newborn, and both efforts will suffer. I recommend waiting at least 6 months post-partum before proceeding with a tummy tuck. (Anita Patel, MD, Beverly Hills Plastic Surgeon)
Is It Safe to Perform Tummy Tuck Surgery Right After a C-section?
Yes you can. I recommend a waiting period of 6 months to allow the overstretched abdominal skin and muscles to shrink naturally so that your surgeon will work on normal, rather than stretched tissues. (Ivan Thomas, MD (retired), Los Angeles Plastic Surgeon)
Wait a couple of months before having an abdominplasty after a C-section.
The abdomen (indeed, the entire body), needs some time to recover after a C-section. I would suggest a couple of months at least although there is nothing in our literature to support a necessay proper delay. The C-section scar is irrelevant since it would be removed as part of the abdominoplasty. (Vincent N. Zubowicz, MD, Atlanta Plastic Surgeon)
No tummy tuck at the same time as a c-section!
The risk of infection is much higher. Your uterus is still distended aftrer the delivery of the baby and wouldn’t allow for a great tummy tuck result. Your body needs time to equilibrate after a pregnancy, with all the hormonal shifts that occur, and you need time to heal from your c-section. You need to be there for your baby. (Carmen Kavali, MD, Atlanta Plastic Surgeon)
Do not have a Tummy Tuck with a C-Section
Do not have a tummy tuck immediately after a C-section. The effects of pregnancy on your abdomen are at their peak during your third trimester. After you give birth, your abdomen will undergo significant changes.
As you lose the pregnancy weight, your abdomen will thin, your skin will contract, and your muscles will regain their tone. The most compelling reason though is that you need to spend this time with your baby, not recovering from a tummy tuck. Also, wait until you’re done having kids before having a tummy tuck. (David Bogue, MD, Boca Raton Plastic Surgeon)
Tummy tuck right after a C-section
The short answer is NO. Not only is your physiology right after deliver not optimal for recovering from this type of surgery, but your final aesthetic result would be sub par. The size of your uterus right after delivery would preclude obtaining the necessary tightening of abdominal wall muscles. (Boris M. Ackerman, MD, Newport Beach Plastic Surgeon)
Do Not Have a Tummy Tuck Immediately After a C-Section
Tummy tuck after C Section should not be performed by any qualified Board Certified Plastic Surgeon for many reasons, both for unsatisfactory results and because it puts the patient at risk. During pregnancy the body’s tissues are swollen and distorted for 6 months or more after pregnancy and during that time your body is going through many hormonal and physiological changes as well.
If you were to have a tummy tuck after a C-Section, you would most likley experience uneven results and additional sagging skin after surgery because all of the necessary skin and tissues were not able to be removed. It is advised that patients wait until their body has returned to it’s normal state and the baby weight is lost prior to undergoing a tummy tuck surgery.
This time frame varies from patient to patient. Not only will patients not achieve the results they desire, a tummy tuck after a c-section is not safe.
During pregnancy and following giving birth, blood vessels are dilated which will result in additional blood loss, which potentially could cause significant problems. Ambiotic fluid is also present, which can contaminate the area, putting patients at risk for infection and other post tummy tuck complications. (Tarick K. Smaili, MD, Beverly Hills Plastic Surgeon)
