Keloid Scars are defined as "scars which grow beyond the original border of the incision or wound, and continue to grow". The treatment of keloid scars has always presented a terrible problem
for Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeons as simply removing them causes a new incision and an even larger Keloid Scar to grow! My patient is a young 21-year-old girl presented with a MASSIVE Keloid Scar, about the size of a golfball, if not larger, growing out of a piercing in her left earlobe! NO guarantees can ever
be given in medicine, except in treating Keloids! I guarantee that simply "cutting or burning" the Keloid
off, as many practitioners do, will result in the Keloid growing back. In this extremely difficult and
complex case, the patient's keloid was removed, flaps were designed from the remaining skin, and fit
together like pieces of a puzzle to completely reconstruct the patient's left earlobe. This was an
extremely complex case...to not only remove the Keloid but retain the natural shape of the earlobe,
matching the opposite side as exactly as possible, required a tremendous amount of planning before the
operation and incredible precision during the operation. As can be seen in the post-op photos, the patient now has a left earlobe which nearly perfectly matches the right earlobe! Additionally, all
incisions are hidden BEHIND the earlobe, leaving no visible scar on the outer surface of the earlobe! The
most import aspect of the case; the fact that the patient is so incredibly happy with the reconstruction,
telling me that people can't even tell surgery was ever performed, nor can they see a difference from
one earlobe to the other!
